Mac, a lab/pointer/pit mix - Wearing a cone after emergency veterinary work on his foot.

Mac has had a rough time of things. His person was living in California with his girlfriend and came back to Oregon for awhile. During his absence the girlfriend surrendered Mac to the shelter, where he was scheduled to be euthanized. His person found out and contacted the shelter, arranged and paid for transport up to Oregon, but, on transport day he was unable to make it to the pick up point. After a great deal of back and forth his person let us know that he was both wheelchair bound and homeless. So, his person surrendered Mac to us, and he has been in our care ever since.

Everything was going great until December 20th, 2025 when Mac began stumbling while walking. I rushed him into the Emergency Vet where they determined he needed a blood transfusion. The community rallied and raised funds for him, and the transfusion went great. A few days later, though, his foot swelled. We cleaned it and didn’t see any obvious sign of injury. The next day he seemed to be doing better, but the following day he was licking it like crazy. So, on went the cone – and he took it off, and I put it back on, and he took it off – over and over and over again, all the while his foot was getting worse, accelerated by his diminished immune system from the prednisone. So, back we went to the emergency vet, by which time he had done so much damage to his foot that they weren’t sure they could save his foot. I cried – not kidding. All this to be here, with no idea what started any of it.

After two weeks of daily bandage changes we are finally scheduled to get his foot amputated, and are frantically trying to raise $2000 to cover the surgery and any related veterinary costs. If you can help us, please donate at https://k-9elite.dog/paypal.

In the meanwhile, he has been visibly improving, even starting to jump up on me at the vet’s office (where he has become quite popular). His energy has improved, color is returning to his gums, and we’re seeing some weight come back on.

Mac has a great chance to live a full life, and we’re so glad that we could be here to help him through this rough patch.

I’ll keep updating his post here as things progress with Mac, and check out more updates on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/k9eliterescue.
